EyePen

EyePen is the result of more than 2 years of collaborative study with visually-impaired children at an institute for disabled in Bangladesh. EyePen initially started as a desktop software to mitigate existing challenges visually-impaired students face during class-room examination. Our ethnographic study helped us to comprehend that custom solutions using PC, smart phone, or tablets are less likely to aid them under low-income and low-resource constraints. Moreover, our findings helped us to understand that existing palpable Braille printing is costly. So we started working on COTS tools to solve reading and writing problem of visually-impaired children. We printed Braille characters using ink-based printers on a paper, and developed a pen and a trajectory board that guided the pen. Our current implementation achieves a low-cost status of less than $10.

Sign of Life

Sign of Life drew motivation from industrial accidents, disasters, and subsequent colossal loss of lives at several Ready-made Garment factories in Bangladesh. Our study revealed that in most cases, fire-fighters and rescuers do not have adequate spatial data about victims trapped inside. Locating and rescuing vulnerable victims should be prioritized. We pitched our idea of localization at Microsoft Imagine Cup 2014 Bangladesh round, and eventually we came out as champions. Our endeavour continued and we started acknowledging disaster-affected settings as a separate domain of research. Currently, we are trying to build a system that can localize victims without any pre-processed information and infrastructural help.

EcoRadar

EcoRadar is an Ecological Radar system for detecting environmental pollution in Bangladesh. The project has been approved and funded by the Ministry of Education, Government of People's Republic of Bangladesh. We developed an integrated module comprising of CO, CO2, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), NO2, and SO2. Additionally, we monitor temperature and humidity of the adjacent environment. We have deployed EcoRadar in our laboratory, at a busy traffic intersection, and inside public vehicles to monitor air quality.

RailCop

Railway in Bangladesh is prone to frequent derailments. One of the reasons behind these accidents is due to missing rail blocks and uprooting fish plates that attaches the rails. We devised RailCop - a wireless sensor network system in which an approaching train will query sensor nodes more than 500m ahead. Our system senses and compares the natural vibration of an approaching train and conveys safe/unsafe message to the driver.
